Returning to the Heart of Joy
By Emily Blefeld, LICSW and Dan Cohen, PhD
This August, Róisín Fallon, Emily Blefeld, and Dan Cohen invite you to Restoring the Pain of History, Returning the Heart to Joy, a Seeing with Your Heart retreat in the Wicklow Mountains. Using Alchemical Constellations to explore ancestral healing, mythology, and sacred landscape you will experience for yourself how, when your heart heals, your entire lineage begins to breathe a little easier.
The Long Shadow of History
Ever since war became the dominant currency of kings and armies, the patriarchal Sun God’s fire eclipsed the cyclical strength of Earth Goddesses. Under that fierce flame, women’s bodies, creative power, and capacity for wisdom, innovation, and vision were blinded, wilted, and burned.
Generation after generation, this conditioning narrowed women into the smallest roles: raising children, keeping house, cooking, cleaning, laboring the land — unpaid, unheralded, nearly invisible.
The men of Ireland carry their own painful inheritance. Eight centuries of English colonialism refined and perfected the machinery of conquest. The invaders stole land, labor, and resources forcing the majority into humiliating compliance, and a small minority into co-opted henchmen. Irishmen labored in the fields and the quarries. Too often the only way out was off the island altogether. Over the centuries, every family lost sons — to poverty, to drink, to exile.
Out of this history, resignation and defiance circulated in the blood. The Irish, once the most magical and musical people, changed their tune. Melancholy became the melody and antagonism the lyrics that played in pubs and farmhouses day and night.
A Nation Healing Its Soul
Ireland, long one of the poorest nations in Europe, is now one of the most prosperous. But the loyalty to melancholy and antagonism remains fixed in the national soul. It is bred in the bone. Joy, optimism, and good fortune feel almost like betrayal of the struggles of the older generations and indifference to the unforgivable crimes of past oppressors.
As Systemic Family Constellations facilitators, we know that every symptom has a story, every pattern has a purpose, and every burden once belonged to someone who was trying to love, survive, or belong the best way they knew how.
Ireland has become one of our greatest reminders that this is true for cultures as much as it is for families.
Between Field and Mountain, Myth and Mystery, Brigid Rises
In the new Century, heavy stones are sliding off the people’s backs and a lightness of being is elevating the emotions and soul. The old roles and loyalties are receding. Celebrating one’s own good fortune is not disloyalty to the past. For Ireland’s ancestors, their defiance and endurance are rewarded where abundance is restored.
A new fire is kindling. The Goddess Brigid is in the hearth-fire that restores warmth to what has grown cold, the forge-fire that reshapes without destroying, and the live flame that renews after long seasons of hardship. She carries the wisdom of poets and healers, of those who knew that words could wound or heal as surely as iron.
The Thinning Veil
When the key opens the secret garden,
when the one ring is found,
when the tomb is found empty,
when the moon is full,
when the summer ends,
and darkness creeps in,
when magic and mystery dance with myth and poetry.
And we know, suddenly, that there is more to the story, always, when we lift the veil, the web is real.
~ Alix Klingenberg
The spiral of history is turning towards the eternal and magical heritage of the Irish land and people. It is time to bring a softer light to discharge the pain of the long, long past, and open hearts to new possibilities for love, reconciliation, and enlivened joy.
Supported by the tranquility of the Wicklow Mountains and guided by Emily and Dan’s masterful facilitation, you will gently untangle the knots of intergenerational trauma and release the burdens that have been passed down through the generations.
Why We Are Returning to Ireland
Ireland is where mythology still breathes through the hillsides. Where sacred wells continue to draw pilgrims. Where stories linger in stone circles, ruined temples, forests, caves, and windswept mountains. The earth itself holds the memory of conquest, resilience, devotion, grief, and renewal. Ireland is celebrated for its music, its poetry, its storytellers, its fierce humour, its folklore and its extraordinary capacity to gather people around a heath.
For Emily and Dan, Ireland, its land and spirit, is one of the wisest presences in the room. The more time we spend there, the more we experience Ireland as a teacher.
Brigid and the Seed
We call Brigid, and she comes to remind the body what the mind has forgotten. In representation, images, and epiphanies, she becomes a participant in the conversation between who we’ve been and who life is inviting us to become.
How many of us have become comfortable seeds?
How many of us have learned to mistake survival for living, remaining buried beneath inherited grief, inherited fear, inherited silence, because the darkness has become familiar?
Brigid doesn’t ask the seed to bloom before its time.
She simply tends the fire beneath the earth until life remembers that it already knows how to grow.
A Gathering for Healing and Renewal
For us, this retreat is about gathering in a land that knows both unimaginable suffering and extraordinary resilience.
Listening for the stories that still live beneath our feet and within our bodies.
Honouring the strength of those who came before us while laying down the burdens they never intended for us to carry.
Planting bulbs for something new to emerge because we’ve finally found a right relationship with our own emergence.
Whether your ancestors left Ireland generations ago, you still call it home, or your heart feels mysteriously drawn to its land, this retreat is your place for alchemical transmutation.
We welcome you into our Ireland Retreat: Restoring the Pain of History, Returning the Heart to Joy.
Far removed from the speed and noise of ordinary life, the Slí an Chroí retreat center invites your nervous system to soften, your heart to open, and the deeper movements of your soul to become audible once again.
