With today’s announcement that the 2024 Nobel Prize for Literature was awarded to Korean author Han Kang, the mainstream culture acknowledges an author whose work “bridges the intertwine of the living and dead, showing how past traumas remain active in our DNA for generations.” In this passage of her lyrical prose, Han depicts a woman who many therapists and healers may recognize from their own clients, or even a part of themselves:
She was brought up short again and again. As though the force that prevents her moving forward to the light stands always at the ready inside her own body. All those hours when she had lost her way, in hesitation and in doubt.
Emily Blefeld and Dan Cohen have mapped this inner landscape for decades and found the key to unlocking the grip of inherited trauma that traps people unconsciously in patterns of grief, shame, and fear that keep them small. The “force that prevents…” is an ancestor whose suffering is woven into the DNA and felt as a burden or block. There is a way through. When the ancestor is met and seen, amd their story and unresolved pain healed, the living descendants are freed to move forward without restraint. Again, in Han’s words:
“If you were able to live as you desire, what would you do with your life?”
